What Is DTF Printing?
DTF printing, short for direct to film printing, is a method of producing custom heat transfers by printing your design onto a special PET film, coating it with hot-melt adhesive powder, and curing it in an oven. The finished transfer is then pressed onto fabric using a heat press. The result is a full-color, durable graphic that bonds tightly to the material and holds up through repeated washing.
Compared to screen printing, DTF printing has no setup fees, no color separation costs, and no minimum order requirements. Screen printing requires separate screens for each color in your design, which means setup costs that only make sense at high volumes. DTF handles unlimited colors and complex gradients with zero additional cost, making it the better choice for small runs, one-offs, and designs with photographic detail.
Compared to heat transfer vinyl (HTV), DTF transfers are softer to the touch, more durable over time, and capable of far greater detail. HTV requires cutting each design from colored vinyl sheets and weeding out the negative space, which limits complexity and adds labor. DTF prints the entire design in one pass, including fine lines, gradients, and multi-color artwork.
FiftyOne Designs offers custom DTF printing from our Georgia facility. We serve the Atlanta metro area for direct-to-film printing Georgia customers who need fast local turnaround, and ship nationwide via USPS and UPS for everyone else. Whether you need a single DTF transfer for a one-time project or a bulk order for a full product line, we print with the same care and quality at any quantity.
Most orders are printed and shipped within 1-2 business days. No setup fees, no minimums, no surprises.
DTF vs Screen Printing vs Embroidery
DTF printing wins on setup cost, minimum order, and full-color capability for most custom apparel orders. There are no screens to burn, no color limits, and no artwork fees. If you need ten shirts with a five-color logo, DTF is the most cost-effective path available.
Screen printing becomes more competitive at very high volumes, typically 500 units or more with the same design. At that scale, the per-unit ink cost of screen printing can undercut DTF. Below that threshold, DTF wins on price and flexibility in nearly every scenario.
Embroidery offers a texture and premium feel that DTF cannot replicate. For polo shirts, hats, and workwear where a raised, stitched look is the goal, embroidery is the right choice. For detailed artwork, gradients, photographic prints, or designs with thin lines, DTF produces far sharper results than embroidery can achieve.
FiftyOne Designs offers DTF printing, screen printing, and embroidery. If you are unsure which method is right for your project, contact us and we will help you choose based on your design, quantity, and budget.

DTF FAQ
Common Questions About DTF Printing
Still have a question? We are a real shop with real people. Reach out and we will get back to you fast.
Contact UsHow durable are DTF transfers? +
DTF transfers are wash-durable and designed to last the life of the garment with proper care. For best results, wash garments inside out in cold water and tumble dry on low heat. Avoid high-heat drying and direct ironing over the transfer. Properly applied and cared for, DTF prints hold their color and adhesion through hundreds of wash cycles.
What fabrics does DTF work on? +
DTF transfers work on cotton, polyester, cotton and polyester blends, nylon, leather, denim, and most other common fabrics. DTF is one of the most versatile transfer methods available because it does not require a special fabric coating or pre-treatment. The one exception is waterproof or silicone-coated materials, which do not bond well with DTF adhesive. If you are unsure about your fabric, contact us before ordering.
What is the minimum order for DTF transfers? +
There is no minimum order. You can order a single DTF transfer or a thousand at the same price per unit. We never require a minimum quantity, which makes DTF ideal for sample runs, one-off projects, small batches, and large production orders alike.
How do I apply a DTF transfer at home? +
You need a heat press to apply DTF transfers correctly. A home iron does not apply the consistent, even pressure required to bond the transfer adhesive to the fabric. Set your heat press to 320-330 degrees Fahrenheit, apply medium pressure for 10-15 seconds, and peel the film while the transfer is still hot. Allow the garment to cool before wearing or washing. If you do not have a heat press, many local print shops and embroidery businesses offer pressing services.
What file format do you need for DTF printing? +
PNG at 300 DPI with a transparent background is the ideal format for DTF printing. Transparent backgrounds ensure clean design edges with no white box around your graphic. We also accept JPG, SVG, AI and EPS, PSD, and PDF files. Our team reviews every file before it goes to print and will contact you if any adjustments are needed before we proceed.
